✈️ 1 interesting thing: Jason goes to Cuba

🇨🇺 Jason here. I was in Cuba for six days as part of an educational trip last month with my husband.

State of play: I didn't take up communism, but I learned a lot. Most importantly:

  • Don't inhale a cigar.
  • Our homemade mojitos are as good as theirs.

My thought bubble: The country is gorgeous. However, it continues to struggle with an economic crisis that's resulted in widespread poverty, food shortages and electricity outages.

  • A whiplash of U.S. economic sanctions or travel restrictions against Cuba in recent years is confusing and linked with the problems.

💐 1 in memoriam to go: Jon Torgerson, my former Drake professor who taught a class on Cuba, crossed my mind multiple times while I was on this trip. He died in December at 81.
