Sergeants, lieutenants and captains represented by the Des Moines Police Gold Braid Organization (GBO) will receive a 4% raise in July under an agreement approved this week by City Council.

Why it matters: Metro agencies have struggled to recruit officers in recent years.

Details: The agreement with the GBO covers 76 employees and runs through the fiscal year that ends in June 2025.

  • It will cost the city an estimated $220,000 more in salaries and about $81,000 in other benefits that include more sick leave accrual.

Of note: DSM has agreements with eight union groups that represent city employees.

  • Police and fire contracts expire in June, with others expiring in 2025 or 2026.
  • A contract with the DSM Police Bargaining Unit (PBU), a separate union that represents hundreds of other police employees, is anticipated to go before the council March 4.
