An average of 180,000 Iowa adults had medical debt of at least $250 in any given year between 2019 and 2021, according to a new study from the Peterson Center on Healthcare and KFF.

Zoom in: That's about 8% of Iowa adults.

  • People with medical debt are also a segment of the population that is more likely to have lower incomes, lack insurance or the ability to afford copays and deductibles, per the study.

The big picture: Iowa's share of adults with medical debt is not statistically different from the national annual average of 8.6%.

  • Of surrounding states, only Minnesota (7.6%) has a lower rate.
