The folks at Terlato Kitchen have come up with a new use for giardiniera: as a flavor booster for their latest pasta sauce.

Driving the news: They sent me a sample of the Spicy Giardiniera Pasta Sauce ($10), and I gave it a try.

What they're saying: The sauce "pays homage to Chicago's rich culinary diversity, providing not just a taste but a true Chicago flavor experience," said Chicago-raised John Terlato, who leads Terlato Kitchen and Wine Group.

Dig in: Think of an excellent, not-too-sweet, jarred pasta sauce with spicy, peppery undertones and the texture of finely chopped giardiniera.

The verdict: I liked this bold sauce but, as a self-confessed giardiniera fiend, I felt I needed even more and topped off my pasta with a tablespoon of the condiment for good measure.

🛒 You can find the sauce at Mariano's, Jewel, Meijer and Sunset stores.
