The city of Charlotte broke ground on its first all-electric firehouse Monday morning at 3019 Beam Road.

Why it matters: Firehouse 30 will be the first all-electric firehouse in the Southeast, according to the city. It will have an all-electric fire engine.

Context: The new 14,000-square-foot, three-bay, two-story facility will serve primarily the Beam Road/airport area.

  • It will replace the existing one at 4707 Belle-Oaks Dr., which was built in 1955 and has been a Charlotte firehouse since 1991.
