U.S. Sen. Ted Budd was in Charlotte Monday speaking with local business leaders about the importance of broadband access and growing the trade workforce, among other issues impacting the regional economy, Axios' Alexandria Sands writes.

What he's saying: The senator was staunch in his support of immediate deductions for research and development costs.

  • "We think that will attract a lot of business," Budd said of the tax deal. But, he says he disagrees with how it's currently packaged with the "too expensive" child tax credit.

Zoom out: Budd discussed how his priorities quickly shifted on Oct. 7 as a freshman senator when Hamas attacked Israel. He's visited the Middle East several times during his first year in office.

  • "One of my focuses right now is to make sure that we get ... our U.S. hostages home," he said. That includes Chapel Hill native Keith Siegel.

Of note: Budd declined to attend his scheduled media availability and did not take any questions from reporters.
