2018 Finalist: GREEN DESIGN

by Laura Sumrak cover

“The lot, deemed unbuildable, was first cleared by our 2 goats, then 5 years of hard work followed to build this house to the german passivhaus standard. I poured the foundation, distributed tons of gravel by wheelbarrow, laid 21,000 pieces of brick mainly for interior walls and superinsulated lightweight concrete blocks for the exterior walls, mixed tons of mortar, learned how to do the electric, plumbing and hvac myself, and did the interior and exterior finishes – all while looking after our son who was born during the first year of building.

Now we are a part of the great NoDa community, living in our house under a green (vegetative) roof, that consumes half of what Duke Energy defines as energy efficient…” -Gerrit M Baumann, homeowner
