Charlotte-area private schools are already gearing up for open houses and applications for the 2017-2018 school year. Here’s what you need to know.
Cannon School
Location: 5801 Poplar Tent Road
Open houses:
October 6, 7 to 9 p.m. – All grades
November 5, 1 to 3 p.m. – All grades
Walk-In Wednesdays – Drop-in campus tours are available every Wednesday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Tuition (2016-2017 school year):
Junior Kindergarten and Half-Day Kindergarten – $12,645
Full-Day Kindergarten – $16,915
Grades 1-4 – $16,915
Grades 5-8 – $18,695
Grades 9-12 – $20,835
Bus service will also accrue bi-yearly fees:
Round-Trip – $1,410 for the first student plus $776 per each additional sibling
One-Way – $900 for the first student plus $512 per each additional sibling

Financial aid is available and determined by the School and Student Services by NAIS and applications are due by February 15. Aid will never cover the full cost of tuition, and families receiving the “maximum” amount of help will be required to pay $3,000 per student, per year for tuition. The school doesn’t award athletic or merit-based scholarships.
Application process and due date:
Each student, regardless of grade, have a completed application along with a teacher recommendation. Grades 5-12 need recommendations from both English and math teachers. Student visits are also required, as are entrance evaluations:
Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten applicants should meet with the Director of Admission and/or Cannon teachers for developmental assessments that will begin in November.
Students in grades 1-3 are required to take the Children’s Progress Academic Assessment along with reading and writing grade level assessments online.
All other students (grades 4-12) are required to take the ISEE.

Carmel Christian School

Application process and due date:
All families may schedule a tour before starting the application process. Applications can be found online here. Students will also be tested for cognitive and educational abilities and are required to submit report cards, transcripts and standardized test scores along with birth certificates and immunization records. Students will also be required to shadow their grade for a school day.
Parents will take part in a formal interview with the Associate Head of Advancement, which is an opportunity for families to tell their “personal story of their faith in Jesus.”

Charlotte Catholic High School

Full tuition payment is heavily encouraged, but monthly payment plans and financial aid are both available. Financial aid is determined through School and Student Services and do not exceed more than 50% of tuition.
Application process and due date:
For students going into Junior Kindergarten through 1st grade, teacher recommendations should be completed by November 1, 2016 and mailed to Charlotte Christian before February 1, 2017. The application should be submitted before January 15, 2017, after which a 45-minute play date (developmental screening for Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students) or half day visit (1st grade) will be scheduled, along with a family interview in January or February.
For grades 2-12, a letter of recommendation and transcript from a current teacher should be received by March 1, 2017, at which date students up to the 4th grade should also have completed the Woodcock Johnson Testing and mailed the results to the school. 5th through 12th grade students need to have their ISEE results mailed to the school before March 1, 2017. All applicants will take part in an on-campus visit and family interview.

Applications for the 2017-2018 school year can be completed online and are due January 15, 2017.
Students must then complete an entrance test. For students in Junior Kindergarten through 4th grade, qualified psychologists perform standardized screening assessments that you can learn more about here. Students in grades 5 through 12 are expected to take the Independent School Entrance Examination that measures things like verbal ability along with reading, writing and math skills.
After these steps are completed, applicants are invited to speak with faculty members and send teacher recommendations along with a transcript (for students in grades 6 through 12).

Charlotte Jewish Day School

2nd and 4th graders will take the Woodcock Johnson Cognitive Abilities Test while grades 5-8 will take the ISEE.

Christ the King Catholic High School

Application process and due dates:
Applications must be received by January 12 to be considered in the first round of admissions decisions, but the school does maintain rolling admissions, which means there’s technically no deadline. Applications can be found online.
After the application is complete, transcripts and teacher and pastor recommendations are required to be in the office by February 1 for Transitional Kindergarten and Kindergarten and March 1 for all other grades.
Students will then complete the admissions screening portion of the process through testing that is arranged and paid for by the Admissions Office. Family interviews will also take place in order to verify that the family is a family of practicing Christians.

Applications for all ages can be found online here and although Davidson operates on a rolling admissions basis, applications must be in by February 1 to be considered for priority screening.
Teacher recommendations, transcripts and visits to the school are required, as well as admission testing.
Those ages 3 and under must be seen for a classroom observation session.
Transitional Kindergarten through 4th grade students need to complete the Woodcock-Johnson Aptitude or Achievement test at the school as early as possible – applications aren’t complete without the results.
Grades 5-12 are expected to take the ISEE between the months of October and April and should complete it before the February 1 deadline.

Submitted preschool applications will be followed by an on-campus visit and family interview. All students must be potty-trained.
Kindergarten and elementary aged students will take part in an on-campus visit and family interview and will submit a copy of their most recent report card and standardized test results. Students in grades 1-5 also need a teacher recommendation.
Students in grades 6-12 will have an on-campus visit, family interview and admissions testing that will last 1 hour and 45 minutes. Report cards, standardized test scores and recommendations from both a teacher and pastor are required.

Due dates for the 2017-2018 school year aren’t available yet, but each applicant must submit the online application and pay the registration fee, as well as submit a current report card with a “C” average (grades 1-12), educational and diagnostic testing, teacher and personal character recommendations (grades 6-12), academic referral form and student questionnaire.
All new students will be given an evaluation while students in grades 6 through 12 will also participate in an interview with the school principal.

Parents will meet with the Director of Advancement for a school tour before meeting with the Head of School for an interview. After this has taken place, the student will spend a morning at the school shadowing his or her grade before meeting for an informal interview and screening.

Application process and due dates:
For Transitional Kindergarten and kindergarten students, a WPPSI IQ test must be scheduled by December 1, 2016 and completed by February 1, 2017. Students in 1st grade must also schedule the appointment by December 1, but have until March 1 to complete the appointment.
Students in grades 2 through 4 must register for the Woodcock Johnson Cognitive test by December 1, 2016 and complete it by March 1, 2017.
All other students (grades 5-12) must complete the ISEE test.
