Take advantage of free workouts in 13 locations around Charlotte

Finding the time and motivation to work out is hard. But when a workout is free and easily accessible, you can throw your excuses out the window.

#TheFreeWorkout, a partnership between OrthoCarolina and #thesavageway, has launched in thirteen neighborhoods around Charlotte. It’s completely free and it will make you sweat.

What exactly is it?

It’s basically a self-guided workout found along an 800-1,000 foot stretch of sidewalk in each neighborhood. Utilizing Clean Graffiti, the directions for the workout are stenciled directly on the sidewalk and consist of a variety of different body weight exercises.

The workouts are designed by OrthoCarolina medical provider, Aaron Hewitt, who wants to encourage Charlotteans to get more active.

Where can I find it?

The workouts can be found in thirteen locations around Charlotte. Locations include:

  • Dilworth
  • Sedgefield
  • Cherry
  • NoDa
  • West Charlotte
  • Wilmore
  • Huntersville (Gilead Rd. & Bradford Hill Lane)
  • Ballantyne (Bevington Place-4 mile Creek Greenway & Ardrey Kell Rd.)
  • University (Margie Ann Dr., Mary Alexander Rd. and Highland Creek)

How difficult is it?

The workout itself is doable for almost anyone. It consists of exercises like jumping jacks, push ups and more. The directions have you go through the workout five times, which definitely got me sweating but it can easily be modified to your personal fitness level.

What should I wear/bring?

Just shorts, a t-shirt and sneakers will work. It’s also hot out there so you’ll want to make sure you bring a water bottle.

My take

I’m in the process of training for the Charlotte Half-Marathon and this was a great way to mix up my routine. It was a challenging workout overall but every exercise is easy to do.

I also loved being out in the community and exercising in a place I’m not used to. It’s a great excuse to grab a friend and spend the afternoon sweating it out. Plus, I loved that it’s free. Pro tip: If you go to the one in Sedgefield, you can treat yourself to Ru San’s afterwards.
