Agenda Briefing for Friday November 13: Church to turkey

Hello Friday.

What should Elevation Church pastor Steven Furtick do about disclosing his finances? Morgan Fogarty at WCCB recently landed an interview with Furtick that reignited the media’s fascination with Furtick’s personal finances.

It’s OK if he makes a ton of money — he’s worth it — but he should disclose it. Honestly, I’m unsure what he gains by not being transparent and accountable. By all accounts, he’s a remarkable spiritual leader who has made an incredible impact on tens of thousands of Christian Charlotteans. Here’s my complete commentary on the issue. Anyways.

VITALS

Today’s Weather: 63. Sunny and windy. 10% chance of rain.

ORIGINALS

23 Charlotte restaurants with Thanksgiving menus better than your grandma’s [Levans]
My picks: $39/adult 3-course dinner with family-style sides from Sullivan’s or the $32/adult “Thanksgiving Smorgasbord” from Bistro La Bon. I loved viewing this list.

Construction on those toll lanes on I-77 starts Monday [Dunn]
Recap: This is a $648 million public-private partnership to ease congestion on I-77 between Charlotte and the Lake Norman area. There is a ton of public pressure agaist the toll lanes, but it may be too late to stop them.

9 spots that make Montford the coolest strip in Charlotte [Moore]
I love Montford. I order buckets of beers at Angry Ale’s and Good Food is my go-to date night spot. I’m too old for late night at Jeff’s Bucket Shop.

Your guide to a very Charlotte Thanksgiving (meal) [E. Dunn]
Know your Turkey Day options. View 7 top turkey purchasing spots, 5 spots for sourcing fresh sides and 4 bakeries for desserts.

The day the QC lost its cool (and it felt so good!) [Long]
Carolina Panther fans are consistently ranked among the most polite fans in the NFL. I agree, it did feel so good to be bad when Cam ripped down that Packers banner.

Charlotte might use sports tickets and free rent to recruit new teachers [Dunn]
Interesting ideas. You’ve got to applaud the creative thinking. I didn’t realize that CMS offers begining teachers a salary of $35,000 while South Carolina offers $45,000.

Meet the woman who makes jewelry out of shotgun shells [Gross]
Tour Laura James Jewelry located in Dilworth. I love that some pieces are just $30. And, I love that Laura makes jewelery out of stuff like chandelier pieces and horse saddles.

The Adventure Team Challenge is happening at the USNWC this weekend [Broadwell]
The race will feature eight teams of disabled and able-bodied civilian and military veterans. Featured sports: Whitewater rafting, off-road bicycling, rock climbing, orienteering and more.

Photographer takes couch surfing to the streets, literally [O’Gorman]
Fascinating collection of photos featuring a black loveseat and a black and white polka dotted rug from photographer Kevin “Surf” Mitchell.

TALKING POINTS

Sources: The new Uptown Amelie’s is targeting December 1 for their grand opening [Agenda/Instagram]. I walked by this location yesterday and construction seems to be wrapping up.

Moga Charlotte to close after 4 years at Atherton Mill [Levans/Twitter]. The yoga, massage and personal training studio owned by Beth Lange and Emily “Breeze” Ross will shut down at the end of the year. Both women will still offer private sessions and Breeze coaches the bi-weekly free boot camp at STAX on Monday and Wednesday nights.

Uptown streets are going to be a zoo because of marathon closures this weekend, so you may want to avoid driving Uptown [Marusak/Observer]. Some closures start this afternoon and things should be cleared by Saturday evening.

The Modern Cafe at The Bechtler is now open [Agenda/Instagram]. Run by Jill Marcus of The Mother Earth Group, the same people behind Halcyon, Fern and Something Classic.

Happy Friday. I’m pumped because I’m heading to a buddy’s turkey frying and oyster roasting keg party on Saturday afternoon. I don’t always party, but when I do I prefer it to be from the hours of 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on perfect fall afternoons with hot, tasty food items.
