The story behind Ashley Masters’ tattoos

This is part of our ongoing series titled Inked, the human stories behind Charlotte’s tattoos. Ashley Masters is a yoga instructor and the owner of Om Massage and Lotus Rouge.

Ashley’s tattoos

When did you get it?

Last spring

Where did you get it done, artist’s name, costs?

Andrew Black at Charlotte Tattoo. Andrew’s rate varies.

How’d it go down?

I wanted to add to these pale arms. I eat sleep and breathe yoga and had been wanting mantras on my arm for a while. The crane (Mr. Miyagi) is for good luck!

What other design did you consider (what was your 2nd choice)?

On the red “Om mane padme om” I almost went with Sanskrit but decided on the Tibetan script instead.

What’s the story behind it?

The white ink tattoos make up my freedom arm. I have moksha which is sanskrit for liberation on my wrist and on my forearm is lokah samasta sukhino bavantu, which means “may all beings everywhere be happy and free.” The red ink is a statement about how even though the lotus grows in mud and muck, it still makes it to the surface as a beautiful flower. The red lotus is also the logo for my business Lotus Rouge.

What’s next?

I’m ready for lots more ink and can’t wait to get started. My fiance Jake is helping me with a peacock sleeve. (He has lots of tattoos too!)
