Spring is here and just like the daffodils, there are art events popping up everywhere! Here are HappeningsCLT‘s picks for the best art events this month.


First, we are pleased to announce our second exhibition in collaboration with #WeLoveCLT and @809. From April 23rd – June 17th we will feature the work of artist Anna Kenar, with an opening at the next #WeLoveCLT lecture by Ted Williams. For more information, email us at [email protected].


Charlotte has a plethora of really strong museums and they are always putting on great exhibits and programs.  Check out a couple of these coming in April.


There are several events at the Mint Museum this month, including the opening of the highly anticipated Body Embellishment show on April 11th. Catch a VIP preview on April 9th. Or if you are a member, sign up for one of the Members Only Tours on April 10th and 11th.

Mikyoung Kim will be presenting a lecture as part of the Mint’s Contemporary Architecture + Design Lecture Series. The event, co-sponsored by the Charlotte Area Transit System and UNC Charlotte College of Arts and Architecture, is free, though you must pre-register here, or by calling 704.337.2000. Light reception and cash bar to follow the program.

Want to make some art of your own? On April 18th, the Gantt Center is holding another of their Open Easels Workshops. This one is focused on Portraits.  More info here.

Isaac-Payne charlotte


When you are uptown be sure to stop in at New Gallery of Modern Art to see a juxtaposition of paintings by Isaac Payne and sculptures by Mary Ann Prack. Isaac Payne: Intersections & Mary Ann Prack: Body Language are on display April 10th – May 31, with a reception on April 10.

College/University Galleries

With graduation approaching Colleges and University Galleries have the best of the best on display this time of year with BFA and MFA shows. This is a great opportunity to discover the next great artists, and later you can impress your friends by saying, “I bought one of their early pieces when they were just starting out…”

April 8 is the opening of UNC Charlotte Rowe Galleries’ Annual BFA show: Idiosyncracy. Head up to the main campus at 4pm for a panel discussion with the artists and then stick around for the Opening Reception from 5pm – 8pm.

Friday April 17th, head down to Winthrop University for the opening of their MFA Thesis show: Equilibrium and also their 27th Annual Undergraduate Juried exhibition curated by Jenni Carlisle.


The Davidson College Art Galleries’ annual Juried Student show opens April 22. The exhibition highlights works produced during the academic year by both art majors and non art-majors. The 2015 exhibition is open to the public from April 23 through May 6 in the Van Every Gallery. Juror awards (selected by guest juror Crista Cammaroto) will be announced at 7:30pm on evening of the opening. More info here.

Central Piedmont Community College hosts a unique and vibrant arts festival each year in the heart of the city called, Sensoria.  Check out this page that lists all the events happening April 10 – 18th, and stay tuned to HappeningsCLT for more information about specific events, including their annual student exhibition reception on April 14.

Non-Profit Art Centers


One place where we will definitely be is the McColl Center for Art and Innovation Studio Party 15: Upcycled Gala, on April 18th! It’s sure to be an art-filled evening with over 40 artists either transforming studios or contributing work for sale. The Light Factory has quite a few things going on this month! First, check out their class offerings, beginning   April 20. Registration is now open. 

On April 24, the Light Factory opens their 7th Juried Annuale. This year’s winners include Diana Bloomfield from Raleigh, NC; Micah Cash from Charlotte, NC; Beth Lilly from Atlanta, GA; Michael Joseph from Boston, MA; Jeremy Underwood from Houston, TX; and Carl R. Wilson from Logan, UT.

Clayworks Spring Sale and Open house will be April 17, 6pm – 9pm & April 18, 10am-3pm. This is a great opportunity to scoop up some amazing ceramics (Mother’s day gifts, maybe?)
