A record number of open jobs were posted by U.S. employers in March, AP reports, citing a Labor Department report released Tuesday.

Why it matters: Despite a high number of employers seeking workers, April's jobs report found that fewer people were hired than expected. The economy added a mere 266,000 jobs last month while forecasters had floated gains close to 1 million.

By the numbers: A high of 8.1 million jobs were posted on the last business day of March, the agency said in its report — while hires stayed at 6 million.

Between the lines, per AP's Christopher Rugaber: "The enormous number of openings will likely add fuel to a political dispute about whether the extra $300 in weekly federal unemployment aid, on top of a state payment that averages about $320, is discouraging those out of work from seeking new jobs."

Minneapolis' remote job postings explode

Companies in the Twin Cities are increasingly open to remote-friendly roles, a new analysis finds.

Driving the news: Venture capital fund Telstra Ventures looked at hundreds of thousands of jobs posted across the country and ranked the Minneapolis region seventh in the nation for remote work.

  • About 15% of the jobs listed in the Minneapolis region between April 1 and June 30, 2021 were remote-friendly, up from less than 1% for the same period in 2020.

Yes, but: While many employees hope to continue to work remotely after offices reopen, not all businesses are on board, as Axios' Kim Hart reports.

  • These opportunities still represent just a small share of the overall market.

The big picture: The Minneapolis area is in line with the national average — 14% of the postings analyzed by Telstra were for permanently remote positions.

  • Columbus, Ohio, led the nation, with 27% of jobs open to workers based outside the region.
  • Houston, meanwhile, is the least remote-friendly city, with only 2.8% of jobs posted being remote.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story misattributed the source of the data. It is from Telstra Ventures, not the Waters Agency.

"No-code" miracle for startups

The U.S. has reached a tipping point in its shift from the industrial economy — one that relied on the buildout of hardware — to an information economy that relies on the transfer, storage and implementation of data, according to a new report.

Why it matters: This shift towards a data and information-based economy has allowed more businesses to establish themselves and scale quickly and at a very low cost. As such, the number of jobs created by the commercial internet has more than tripled since 2012.

Amazon's small business shield

Amazon is touting the success of small sellers on its platform through the pandemic — and warning that antitrust legislation could jeopardize that success and blow up its open-marketplace model.

Why it matters: As online shopping became a lifeline for both businesses and consumers during the pandemic, Amazon reaped big benefits, but also saw its regulatory risk grow.
