First lady Jill Biden underwent a successful medical procedure Thursday evening to remove an object lodged in her left foot, according to her office.

Driving the news: FLOTUS stepped on the object while walking on a beach in Hawaii last week, an official visit she conducted after attending the Tokyo Games, per the Associated Press.

  • "The First Lady underwent a successful procedure on her left foot to flush out debris from a puncture wound," according to her press secretary, Michael LaRosa. "After inspection of the wound by medical staff, it is unclear what object caused the puncture. The wound is now clean, free of infection and it is anticipated that it will heal nicely."
  • The removal took place at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and President Biden joined her for the procedure.

First lady Jill Biden released her first statement on the U.S. withdrawing from Afghanistan and Thursday's attack in Kabul Friday afternoon.

Why it matters: In her role as first lady, Biden has prioritized military-focused initiatives. She said the attack in Kabul, which killed at least 13 U.S. troops, "left us with the stinging reality of the ultimate sacrifice you are willing to make."

President Biden on Friday urged congressional Democrats to overcome differences surrounding his multi-trillion-dollar economic proposal but said he's still confident it will pass.

Why it matters: It's currently unclear how the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill and the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package will move forward with moderate and progressive Democrats in disagreement over critical portions of the legislation.

President Biden on Friday condemned Border Patrol officers for using horses to deter Haitian immigrants from an encampment under the international bridge earlier this week but took responsibility for the actions and said an investigation is underway.

Why it matters: Photos of patrol officers charging their horses at immigrants prompted criticism of the Biden administration's handling of the crisis at the border.
