The House Judiciary Committee on Friday will interview former White House counsel Don McGahn about former President Trump's alleged attempts to obstruct the Russia investigation.

Driving the news: The interview comes two years after House Democrats requested the testimony of McGahn, who was extensively quoted in special counsel Robert Mueller's final Russia report. McGahn originally defied a 2019 congressional subpoena — resulting in the matter being taken to court.

The state of play: Friday's "transcribed interview" will take place behind closed doors.

  • "While the Judiciary panel eventually won its fight for McGahn’s testimony, the court agreement almost guarantees its members won’t learn anything new. The two sides agreed that McGahn will be questioned only about information attributed to him in publicly available portions of Mueller’s report," AP notes.
  • The House Judiciary panel said that Trump was not involved in the agreement to interview McGhan.
  • Jason Miller, a Trump spokesperson, told Politico last month that Trump had not agreed to the deal and that he was "evaluating his options for fully protecting the privilege that continues to cover his communications with his closest advisors."

Why it matters: Prelogar, if confirmed by the Senate, would be the second woman to ever be in charge of representing the U.S. during litigation before the Supreme court.

The World Health Organization called on countries Sunday to not impose travel bans on southern African nations amid concerns over the new COVID-19 Omicron variant.

Why it matters: The U.S. and countries in Europe and the Asia-Pacific announced travel restrictions in response to Omicron, which was first detected in South Africa. It's since spread to several European countries, Canada, Israel, Australia and Hong Kong. The WHO noted in a statement that only two southern African nations have detected the new variant.

The first two cases of the new Omicron variant have been detected in North America, the Canadian government announced Sunday evening.

Driving the news: The World Health Organization has named Omicron a "variant of concern," but cautioned earlier on Sunday that it is not yet clear whether it's more transmissible than other strains of COVID-19.
