Former federal Judge Barbara Jones. Photo: Drew Angerer/Getty Images

U.S. District Judge J. Paul Oetken on Wednesday appointed former federal Judge Barbara Jones as a "special master" to review materials seized by the FBI from Rudy Giuliani's New York City apartments as part of a federal investigation into his dealings in Ukraine, according to AP.

Why it matters: Jones is now responsible for reviewing the sensitive materials, which include multiple cellphones and computers, and ensuring that attorney-client privilege is protected during the examination, a process that could take months.

Context: After the FBI executed search warrants on Giuliani's apartment and office in April, federal prosecutors requested that a court-appointed outside expert review the materials because of the "unusually sensitive privilege issues" and the "overt and public nature" of the search warrants.

  • Investigators are attempting to determine if Giuliani violated foreign lobbying laws through his interactions with Ukrainian figures.

The big picture: Giuliani has claimed he was acting on behalf of former President Trump, his former client, in Ukraine, according to AP.

  • The former New York City mayor in the summer of 2019 had been attempting to pressure Ukrainian officials into opening investigations into Joe Biden and his son, Hunter, in return for better relations with the Trump administration.

Of note: Jones reviewed materials from FBI search warrants against Michael Cohen in 2018, according to AP.

Editor's note: This post has been corrected to reflect that the FBI searched Giuliani's apartment and office (not two apartments) and that Jones was designated special master in the Michael Cohen case in 2018 (not 2019).

Clinton-linked lawyer indicted in investigation of FBI's Russia probe

Photo: Eric Baradat/AFP via Getty Images

A grand jury has returned an indictment against Michael Sussmann, a lawyer whose firm represented the 2016 Clinton campaign, for lying to the FBI about not representing "any client" when he presented them with allegations about a secret Trump Organization back-channel to a Russian bank.

Why it matters: It's the second criminal charge stemming from special counsel John Durham's review of possible misconduct by the intelligence community and prosecutors who investigated the 2016 Trump campaign's ties to Russia.

Unvaccinated athletes face 21-day quarantine at Beijing Olympics

Athletes, staff members and journalists at the 2022 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus will be required to quarantine for three weeks, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) outlined in its newly-published "playbooks."

Why it matters: The quarantine period is longer than the Games themselves, meaning vaccinations or an earlier arrival date will be required to participate in or cover the Games.

FTX CEO predicts more U.S. crypto flight

Photo: "Axios on HBO"

FTX doesn't look much like a company valued at $25 billion. Its new headquarters, located in a sleepy part of The Bahamas, is so nondescript as to not even have a sign. But it does expect to soon have neighbors.

Driving the news: Founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried tells "Axios on HBO" to expect "more and more crypto flight from the states" if the U.S. doesn't soon create a regulatory regime for cryptocurrencies.
