A new survey of more than 800 CEOS and C-suite executives finds that while a vast majority are optimistic about business conditions in a year, they are also much more cognizant of complex risks beyond the pandemic, such as climate change.

Driving the news: The new survey, conducted by the global professional services firm Aon from Aug. 3 to Sept. 4, consists of findings from interviews with business leaders.

  • A common through-line from the survey of execs in the U.S., UK, EU and Canada: They're paying more attention to making their companies more resilient to a wider range of threats.
  • "In a world where risks are more intertwined, stronger companies are placing increased value on an approach to risk management that considers the interconnectedness of potential threats and integrates those factors into all decision making," the Aon report says.

What they're saying: "We are at an inflection point where businesses are not only focused on overcoming the current challenges such as the pandemic, but shifting to think about other long-tail risks like climate and how to prepare for them," Greg Case, chief executive of Aon, told Axios in a statement.

White House launches "climate services" push, revamps federal climate website

The Biden administration on Tuesday revamped its main climate science website, climate.gov, and launched a push into developing new tools that can provide people with information about the climate risks they face.

Why it matters: The push into what the administration defines as "climate services" comes in response to a mandate from President Biden to put more actionable climate intelligence into the hands of local leaders and everyday Americans.

Fintech's record year

Massive venture rounds into fintech companies have ballooned this year, pushing up total dollars invested — in just the first three quarters of 2021 — to nearly double the amount in all of 2020, per new PitchBook data.

Why it matters: The maturing of fintech startups means a growing number of companies are able to raise huge later-stage funding rounds as investors look to lock-in their bets.

Democrats' clean power outlook is very muddy

Here are two big questions as a key Democratic proposal to slash emissions from power generation flounders: how much its demise would sap climate protections, and what might replace it.

Catch up fast: New financial carrots and sticks for utilities to deploy zero-carbon power — the Clean Electricity Performance Program (CEPP) — look unlikely to stay in Democrats' big social spending and climate bill.
