Boris Johnson attends an online coronavirus media briefing, July 19. Photo: Alberto Pezzali/WPA Pool/Getty Images

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Monday that, beginning in September, England will require people going to nightclubs and other mass public events to show proof of full vaccination, Reuters reports.

Why it matters: Monday also marked "freedom day" in England, as the country lifted many of the remaining coronavirus health restrictions despite rising case numbers.

The big picture: Hours after people flocked to nightclubs early Monday morning, Johnson warned that proof of a negative COVID-19 test would soon "no longer be enough" to gain admission to such events, per Reuters.

  • "I can serve notice now that by the end of September when all over 18s will have had their chance to be double jabbed, we're planning to make full vaccination the condition of entry to nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather," Johnson told a press conference, Reuters reports.
  • Britain's chief scientific adviser, Patrick Vallance, warned that nightclubs and other mass events could prove to be "super spreading events" that cause infections to rise further, per Reuters.

State of play: Other countries are also curbing nightlife in the wake of rising case numbers.

  • The Netherlands almost fully reopened on June 26 and only two weeks later reimposed restrictions until Aug. 13, ordering nightclubs and discos to close amid surging case numbers.

Of note: Despite Johnson's warning to nightlife, he noted the government will not be imposing the same restrictions for pubs, per Reuters.

The Italian government mandated on Thursday that all workers must show proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test or recent recovery from infection, Reuters reports.

Why it matters: Thursday's announcement is one of the strictest pandemic measures in the world and makes Italy the first country in Europe to introduce such a sweeping mandate, per Reuters.

Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-Neb.) has been indicted on charges he falsified records and lied to federal investigators probing an illegal foreign donation scheme, the Justice Department announced on Tuesday.

Driving the news: DOJ says a Fortenberry associate, who later cooperated with investigators, informed him he'd likely received illegal donations from an intermediary for a foreign national, but that Fortenberry denied any knowledge of such a scheme when contacted by the FBI.

Driving the news:Viking Age: Discovery Tour” transforms last year’s “Assassin’s Creed Valhalla” from a bloody 150-hour game about Viking conquest in 9th century England into a peaceful four-hour game about merchants and monks.
