Firefighters set up temporary tents for people displaced by an overnight earthquake in China. Photo: STR/AFP via Getty Images

At least three people died and another 36 people are injured after two separate earthquakes hit China on early Saturday, AP reports.

The state of play: The first earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 and hit southern China, in the Yunnan province. Hours later, approximately 620 miles north, a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit central China in Qinghai province, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

  • The first earthquake left at least three people dead and 28 injured. No deaths have been reported in Qinghai province, but at least eight people have been injured, AP notes.
  • While both earthquakes in relatively quick succession, the events do not appear to be related, per USGS. The agency expects the quakes will trigger aftershocks, but will decrease over time.
  • Work teams have been dispatched to the impacted areas "to check the disaster situation and direct rescue work and disaster relief," Chinese newspaper the People's Daily writes.

Tropical Storm Grace complicates Haiti rescue efforts

Tropical Storm Grace lashed Haiti Monday into Tuesday, complicating rescue efforts following Saturday's earthquake that left at least 1,941 people dead, nearly 10,000 injured and tens of thousands homeless.

The big picture: The temporary pause in search and rescue efforts due heavy rain and strong winds from the storm exacerbated growing anger and frustration in affected areas, AP reported.

Haiti's earthquake shows the reality of the disaster divide

Disasters like the earthquake that struck Haiti on Aug. 14 are caused by nature but exacerbated by human inaction.

Why it matters: Natural disasters will always be with us — and some will be worsened by the effects of human-made climate change — but it's well within our power to keep them from becoming mass killers.

Iran agrees to resume Vienna nuclear talks in November

Iran's new chief nuclear negotiator said following a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday that Iran would resume negotiations in Vienna before the end of November, with the exact date to be set next week.

Why it matters: The Vienna talks have been frozen since Iran's new hardline president, Ebrahim Raisi, was elected in June. This is the most direct commitment from Raisi's government to return to the negotiating table.
