Des Moines City Council cracks down on "scooping the loop"

Scooping the loop in Des Moines is a coming-of-age tradition bred out of Midwest boredom and our love for long drives.

But city officials, like they have for decades, say it's a nuisance to downtown residents that needs to change.

  • Why it matters: The weekend gathering is as classic as a corn dog, but it's at risk because of complaints about noise, loitering and high speeds.

Manatee County lifts evacuation order near Piney Point leak

Officials on Tuesday reopened roads and lifted the evacuation order for residents and businesses near the old Piney Point phosphate plant as they continued to pump nutrient-rich water into Tampa Bay at Port Manatee to relieve pressure on the leak and look for ways to seal it.

What's new: Manatee County commission chairwoman Vanessa Baugh said that the commission approved a nearby injection well to funnel treated water from the leak into the deep earth instead of Tampa Bay, and assured local residents that their drinking water is safe.

Sarasota named top destination for movers in 2020

Data: Zillow; Map: Sarah Grillo/Axios

More people moved to Sarasota in 2020 than almost any other U.S. metro, according to Zillow’s latest study.

Big picture: The study looked at inbound and outbound moves, and Sarasota had the fifth-highest number of net inbound moves.

  • Other top destinations (in order) included Phoenix, Charlotte, Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth.
