Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Photo: Joe Raedle/Getty Images

Florida's board of education could withhold pay from superintendents and school board members who mandate face masks in schools, according to a statement from Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis' office Monday, reports CBS Miami.

Why it matters: Florida is experiencing a spike in COVID-19 cases driven by the highly contagious Delta variant. Rising cases have triggered fierce debate around masking guidelines in schools.

The big picture: Late last month DeSantis issued an executive order banning local school districts from requiring students to wear face masks at school.

What they're saying: The statement from the governor's office stated that failing to comply with the executive order would come with "financial consequences," per CBS Miami.

  • "For example, the State Board of Education could move to withhold the salary of the district superintendent or school board members, as a narrowly tailored means to address the decision-makers who led to the violation of law," the statement read.
  • "The Governor’s priorities are protecting parents’ rights and ensuring that every student has access to a high-quality education that meets their unique needs," it adds.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced pandemic travel restrictions on the Auckland region imposed in August will lift next month, but travelers must provide proof of vaccination or a negative test within 72 hours of departure.

Why it matters: Those who fail to comply with the requirement face an NZ $1,000 fine (U.S. $700) and police will be responsible for enforcement when it takes effect on Dec. 15, Ardern said at a briefing Wednesday afternoon New Zealand time.

Pfizer agrees to licensing deal for COVID-19 pill

Pfizer announced on Tuesday it will allow low and middle-income countries to make and distribute the company’s COVID-19 pill inexpensively. The move is an attempt to increase the global supply in 95 poorer nations.

While the deal helps treat patients, the company has not made the same decision when it comes to its COVID-19 vaccine.

Axios Re:Cap host Felix Salmon is joined by Axios health care business reporter Bob Herman to discuss Pfizer’s decisions and the global ramifications.

Anyone interested in helping pick the name of the new Bellevue-area high school has until Thursday morning to fill out a survey rating each of the six finalists.

Why it matters: Mayor John Cooper has committed $129 million to build the new school, which will replace the current Hillwood High School. The public's vote will help determine the new name, and those interested can take the survey here.

  • The six finalists: Bellevue, Bellewood, Cecil Branstetter, Hillvue, Hopepark, and James Lawson.
