Gursha Ethiopian Grill in Des Moines, Iowa had its grand opening on Jan. 18 and has garnered over 2,100 Facebook followers so far.

The menu is simple: There are five vegetarian options and five beef or chicken options. The service is super fast.

I had noticed that it looked busy, and decided to go try it last weekend. I was enticed by a few factors:

  • Owner Salah Salah and his family have a great track record, operating the Hilal Groceries specialty store for about two decades.
  • Much of the cooking is within view of the counter.

You can try two entrees for $9.95. My choices were:

  • Gomen: Fresh collard greens sautéed in onion, ginger and garlic.
  • Missir wot: Split lentil sauce cooked with berbere, onions, ginger and garlic.

The verdict: A rich combination of spices and herbs created delightful aromatics. The greens were flavorful and the lentils were hearty.

Whether you're a lifelong Des Moines resident or a traveler stopping by, there are culinary treasures to discover across the metro's local restaurants.

The state of play: It's easy to poke fun at the "meat and mashed potatoes" of the Midwest (which, honestly, can be quite tasty) — but, don't discount our town's James Beard award-winning chefs, diverse array of immigrant-owned restaurants and just plain creative creations.

Iconic clothing designer's boyhood Des Moines home up for sale

Roy Halston's boyhood home is for sale in Des Moines.

The intrigue: Halston was an iconic clothing designer from the 1960s until his death in 1990. He designed the pillbox hat worn by Jacqueline Kennedy to her husband’s inauguration in 1961. And he came up with costumes for his friends like Liza Minnelli.

Family-rented homes in Des Moines may require special license

Homes rented to immediate family would require a license under a plan being considered by Des Moines, Iowa.

Why it matters: City leaders say this system jeopardizes housing quality and puts human safety at risk. But changes could create more administrative headaches for some homeowners.
