Federal prosecutors are negotiating a plea deal with an Indiana man charged with attacking Capitol police on Jan. 6, a federal court filing disclosed on Monday shows.

Why it matters: The government’s ongoing plea negotiations with Jon Schaffer "are the first and most advanced plea negotiations involving any of the over 300 Capitol Riot defendants," Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ahmed Baset and Louis Manzo wrote in the brief, which was published publicly and then quickly removed from the docket BuzzFeed News reported.

Catch up quick: Schaffer was arrested on Jan. 17 and faces six charges including using physical violence in the Capitol building and spraying police officers with bear spray, the FBI Indianapolis branch said in a statement.

Capitol security task force leader urges Congress to boost resources

Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, appointed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to review Capitol security measures, urged Congress on Sunday to adopt the security measures his task force proposed last month in order to protect against potential attacks.

Driving the news: One Capitol Police Officer was killed Friday, and another injured, after a male suspect rammed them with a car at a north entrance to the U.S. Capitol. Some security fencing was removed a week ago after heightened security following the Jan 6. attack.

Capitol police "struggling" after second attack, union chief says

Capitol Police is "struggling to meet existing mission requirements" in the aftermath of this year's second attack at the complex, union chief Gus Papathanasiou said in a statement this weekend, NBC News reports.

Why it matters: The union says the agency is approaching "a crisis in morale and force numbers" just as calls for heightened security are renewed in the aftermath of the death of Capitol Police Officer William "Billy" Evans on Friday.

Human remains found in Teton County, Wyoming, are "consistent with the description of" missing 22-year-old Gabby Petito, FBI Denver official Charles Jones said at a news conference Sunday.

Details: The cause of death had yet to be determined, but Jones said: "Full forensic identification has not been completed to confirm 100% that we found Gabby, but her family has been notified of this discovery." Authorities said they're continuing the search for her fiancé, Brian Laundrie.
