California Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis on Thursday set Sept. 14 for Gov. Gavin Newsom recall election.

Why it matters: The election will be only the second time in the state's history that a gubernatorial recall campaign has succeeded in getting on the ballot.

The big picture: Calls for Newsom's ouster picked up after he was photographed at a dinner with a dozen people in Napa County as coronavirus cases surged and the state government restricted social gatherings.

Of note: California's constitution requires the lieutenant governor to declare a recall election after the secretary of state certifies the recall.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) urged people to "believe your own damn eyes" when it comes to climate science, during remarks on Wednesday after meeting with President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and other administration officials to discuss the threat of wildfires on the West Coast.

Driving the news: Wildfire season has started early because of the severe drought and record-breaking heat wave affecting the Pacific Northwest. In California, the Lava Fire grew to nearly 18,000 acres overnight and is continuing to spread.

Pelosi says it's her "plan" to appoint GOP Rep. Kinzinger to Jan. 6 committee

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Sunday that it is her "plan" to appoint Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) to the House select committee investigating the deadly Jan 6. Capitol riots.

Why it matters: Pelosi's statement to ABC's "This Week" comes after she rejected two of the five Republican appointments offered by House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).
