Data: Axios/Ipsos Poll; Note: Employer required margin of error +/-7.5% (N=176), employer not required margin of error +/-3.5% (N=877); Chart: Kavya Beheraj/Axios

Workers are more likely to get vaccinated when their employers require them to, according to the latest installment of the Axios/Ipsos Coronavirus Index.

Why it matters: While that may sound obvious, the data proves that mandates are an important public health tool.

By the numbers: 80% of respondents whose employers require a COVID-19 vaccine said they were already vaccinated and another 10% said they were likely to get a vaccine.

  • In comparison, at employers with no vaccine requirement, 68% said they'd already been vaccinated and another 6% were likely to get the vaccine.
  • Meanwhile, 11% of respondents at employers with mandates said they were either "not likely" or were a "hard pass" on the idea, compared to 27% at employers with no mandates.

Yes, but: While the data doesn't prove a causality it does show strong relationships between employer policies and workers' behavior and attitudes, pollster Chris Jackson, senior vice president for Ipsos Public Affairs told Axios' Margaret Talev.

  • "It does tell us that businesses that are requiring vaccinations are seeing more employees vaccinated and fewer employees opposed to the vaccine than businesses that aren't requiring it," Jackson said.

Between the lines: Mandates are on the rise: 19% of respondents in the survey said their employers are requiring all workers to get vaccinated, up from 16% two weeks ago.

  • And 54% said employers are requiring all workers to wear masks in the workplace, up from 51%.

Pope Francis calls on companies to release COVID vaccine patents

Pope Francis called on pharmaceutical companies on Saturday to release patents to make COVID-19 vaccines more accessible to the poor, Reuters reports.

Why it matters: There is a stark divide between countries that have access to COVID-19 shots and those that don't, and the gap has widened as some wealthier countries have begun distributing third doses.

Survey finds trust gap between Black tech workers and employers

Only 52% of Black tech employees say they trust that their employers value inclusion and diversity, according to a new survey by /dev/color, a non-profit focused on Black technologists.

  • 85% say they'd switch to another employer "that valued me as a Black employee more authentically."

Intel CEO sees making own chips as a matter of national security

Pat Gelsinger. Photo: Axios on HBO

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is putting the pressure on the U.S. government to help subsidize chip manufacturing, insisting the current reliance on plants in Taiwan and Korea as "geopolitically unstable."

Why it matters: There is bipartisan support for funding the domestic semiconductor industry, but Congress has yet to sign the check. The Senate has passed the CHIPS Act that includes $52 billion in semiconductor investment, but it has yet to pass the House.
