The NFL will not resume the Buffalo Bills-Cincinnati Bengals game that was originally suspended after Buffalo safety Damar Hamlin went into cardiac arrest on the field, the league announced on Thursday. 

Details: The game was canceled in part because not finishing would have "no effect on which clubs qualify for the postseason," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement

Yes, but: It does affect which team would have homefield advantage in the AFC championship game. 

It could affect the Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens if both teams were scheduled to meet in the Wild Card game.

The NFL said it would use a neutral site if needed for the AFC championship game, and a coin-toss to decide where a Bengals-Ravens game would be played.

The big picture: Hamlin was now awake and making "substantial progress," his doctors said Thursday.

The 24-year-old was still "critically ill" but appears to be neurologically intact, his team said earlier in the day.  

What they're saying: "As we considered the football schedule, our principles have been to limit disruption across the league and minimize competitive inequities," Goodell said.  

"I recognize that there is no perfect solution. The proposal we are asking the ownership to consider, however, addresses the most significant potential equitable issues created by the difficult, but necessary, decision not to play the game under these extraordinary circumstances," he added.

Longtime ABC News anchor Barbara Walters passed away on Friday, the network announced. She was 93. 

The big picture: Walters became the first female anchor on an evening news program in 1976 when she joined ABC News.

Walters became a co-host of "20/20" three years later, before launching "The View" in 1997. 

Her last appearance as a co-host on the show was in 2014, but she stayed as an executive producer, per ABC.

By the numbers: Walters won 12 Emmy awards in her career, with 11 of those coming during her time at ABC News.

Walters had an extensive career that included exclusive interviews with some of the biggest names in the world — from Russian President Vladimir Putin to former President Nixon to Judy Garland and Bette Midler

She also paved the way for many prominent newswomen, including Diane Sawyer, Katie Couric, Robin Roberts and Connie Chung, per AP.

What they're saying: Walters' former colleagues and other celebrities spoke about her as a singular journalist and generous colleague in tributes shared Saturday.

Diane Sawyer said in a statement to ABC News that Walters "was a trailblazer, a singular force who opened the door for every woman in television news."

Journalist Dan Rather said Walters "outworked, out-thought, and out-hustled her competitors. She left the world the better for it. She will be deeply missed. 

Former President Trump said Walters "was the greatest of them all, by far. I knew her well, was interviewed by her many times, and there was nobody like the legendary Barbara Walters - And never will be!"

Bob Iger, the CEO of The Walt Disney Company, said in a statement that Walters "was a true legend, a pioneer not just for women in journalism but for journalism itself."

NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said on Twitter that "Walters never flinched when questioning the world’s most powerful people. She held them accountable. She cared about the truth and she made us care too."

Oprah Winfrey posted on Instagram about Walters, saying "she was such a powerful and gracious role model."

In May 2014, the ABC News Headquarters in New York was renamed "The Barbara Walters Building." And Walters accepted the honor and talked about her legacy.

"People ask me very often, 'what is your legacy?' and it's not the interviews with presidents, or heads of state, nor celebrities. If I have a legacy, and I've said this before and I mean it so sincerely, I hope that I played a small role in paving the way for so many of you fabulous women."

She made a final appearance as a co-host of "The View" that same year, ABC News reports. Though she stayed on as an executive producer and continued to work with ABC for projects, she said she understood what the future would bring her.

"I do not want to appear on another program or climb another mountain," she said then, per ABC. "I want instead to sit on a sunny field and admire the very gifted women — and OK, some men too — who will be taking my place."

A judge in Peru ordered former President Pedro Castillo to remain in custody for 18 months after authorities requested time to build their rebellion case against him, AP reports. 

Driving the news: Judge Cesar San Martin Castro's order comes just days after Congress ousted Castillo and stripped him of the privilege that keeps the country's presidents from facing criminal charges.

Details: Castillo and his legal team did not participate in Thursday’s virtual hearing, AP writes. 

They argued the hearing lacked “minimum guarantees” and the former President was represented by a public defender, per AP.

Peru's Supreme Prosecutor Alcides Chinchay said in court that Castillo faces at least 10 years in prison for the rebellion charge. Castillo denies the charges.

The big picture: The judge's decision also comes a day after a national state of emergency was declared after a week of deadly protests sparked by the ousting of Castillo.

Peruvian authorities said Thursday at least seven people had died and 52 others were injured during protests in Ayacucho.

On Thursday, protesters in Lima demanded Castillo's freedom, the resignation of new President Dina Boluarte and the immediate scheduling of general elections to pick a new president and members of Congress.

A federal judge in Texas on Thursday put the Biden administration's attempt to end the Trump-era "Remain in Mexico" program on hold.

Driving the news: U.S. District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk is pausing the White House's attempt to end the program while litigation continues.

The big picture: The Trump administration implemented the Migrant Protection Protocols program in early 2019, when border crossings exceeded 100,000 per month.

It forced tens of thousands of asylum-seekers to wait out lengthy U.S. immigration court processes in Mexico, Axios' Stef Kight and Oriana Gonzalez.

Representatives for the Biden administration did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment.

By the numbers: Roughly 70,000 migrants were impacted under the Trump administration.

Catch up quick: In June, the Supreme Court said the Biden administration had the authority to end the program despite objections from Republican-led states. 

But the court sent the case back to Kacsmaryk to consider whether the rollout of October 2021 memo complied with administrative law, CNN writes.

A suspected gunman was arrested in agricultural Northern California after two related shootings near San Francisco left at least seven people dead and one person with life-threatening injuries Monday, officials said.

Driving the news: The second mass shooting to hit California within three days resulted in four people being killed at a mushroom farm on the outskirts of Half Moon Bay and three others near a trucking facility less than a mile away, per San Mateo County Board of Supervisors president Dave Pine.

The injured victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment, officials said.

Children were present at the shooting scenes, according to officials.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Christina Corpus said at a news conference that the suspected shooter,  Chunli Zhao, was found in his car in the parking lot of a sheriff's office substation in Half Moon Bay, a coastal city of some 12,000 people in San Mateo County.

 The 66-year-old was taken into custody "without incident" and the weapon was located in his vehicle, she added.

State of play: Half Moon Bay Councilmember Debbie Ruddock told NBC Bay Area that the victims in the shootings that began about 2:20pm local time were farm workers.

The FBI is assisting the sheriff's office "by providing investigative and forensic resources," the agency said in a statement.

Investigators believe the suspect was working alone and that he was a worker at the agricultural nursery, Corpus said.

What we're watching: Corpus said officials were working to determine Zhao's connection to the victims and to both scenes in San Mateo County, which is known for producing vegetables, flowers and permits cannabis farming in some areas.

What they're saying: "We are sickened by today's tragedy in Half Moon Bay," Pine said in a statement. "We have not even had time to grieve for those lost in the terrible shooting in Monterey Park. Gun violence must stop."

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Monday night that President Biden had been briefed on the shooting and asked "federal law enforcement to provide any necessary assistance to the local authorities."

"Jill and I are praying for those killed and injured in the latest tragic shooting in Half Moon Bay, California," President Biden said in a statement Tuesday.

"For the second time in recent days, California communities are mourning the loss of loved ones in a senseless act of gun violence," Biden added. He reiterated his call for Congress to pass an assault weapons ban. 

The big picture: The mass shooting follows the one in Monterey Park, California, on Saturday night that killed 11 people and injured nine others on the eve of Lunar New Year.

Hours after the San Mateo County shootings, police in Oakland, California, said one person was killed and seven others injured in a shooting.
