Vatican treasurer George Pell in prison after his bail is revoked

Cardinal George Pell plans to appeal his conviction.

Vatican treasurer George Pell was sent to prison in Melbourne, Australia, Wednesday after being convicted of child sexual assault.

Details: The 77-year-old Australian cardinal was convicted in December of sexually abusing two choir boys in the late 1990s. The verdict was not reported until Monday because of Australian procedural laws. His defense team plans to appeal the conviction and he's due to be sentenced on March 13. Pell's bail was revoked when he appeared in court on Wednesday local time for his sentence plea hearing, Melbourne newspaper The Age reports.
