West Virginia public school teachers went on strike Tuesday — nearly one year after their original nine-day action inspired educators across the U.S. to launch picket lines, the Associated Press reports.
The big picture: The teachers' walkout in 2018 over low pay created a domino effect for similar strikes in states including Kentucky, Oklahoma, Arizona and Washington, and this year in California and Colorado. The 2018 strike ended in March after West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice and other state leaders agreed to a 5% pay raise. This time, West Virginia educators are protesting an education bill before the state legislature they see as retaliation for the action they took in 2018.
