Last week's election turnout was the highest for a midterm election in 104 years, according to figures compiled by lobbyist Bruce Mehlman. But it was still fewer than half of all eligible voters — and it looks less impressive when you compare it to other countries.
Why it matters: With all the energy that went into this election, it shows how hard it is to reach everyone else who's eligible to vote. Presidential elections are always higher, but 2016 wasn't high enough to make a big difference compared to other countries' turnouts. Anyway, take that, Switzerland.
