Attorney General Jeff Sessions has submitted his resignation at the request of President Trump, according to a letter addressed to Trump released by the Justice Department.
Why it matters: The president has made it clear he wants Sessions out of the Justice Department and has blamed him for Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion with Russia in the 2016 election. Trump tweeted on Wednesday afternoon that a "permanent replacement will be nominated at a later date" and for now, DOJ chief of staff Matthew Whitaker will serve as acting attorney general.
