The rate of suicide among veterans 18-34 years continued increasing in 2016, sitting at 45 suicides per 100,000, the Department of Veteran Affairs reported on Wednesday.

The big picture: The overall number of annual suicides among veterans decreased between 2015 and 2016, from 6,281 to 6,079. Additionally, there was a higher rate of suicide among veterans in the care of the Veterans Health Administration between 2005 and 2016 than those not receiving care. And while there was an increase in suicide among younger veterans, the majority of suicides (58.1%) came from veterans 55 years old and above.
