Afghan national security adviser quits over "serious differences" with Ghani

Hanif Atmar, national security adviser to President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan, resigned on Saturday according to Reuters.

Why it matters: The resignation was chalked up to "serious differences over policies and principles with government leadership," per Reuters. A senior government officials told Reuters Atmar resigned in preparation for his own 2019 run against Ghani. He was replaced by Hamdullah Mohib, Afghanistan's ambassador to the U.S.
