New fine brings VW scandal up to $19.2B price tag

Volkswagen shareholders will pay a steep $4.3 billion fine to resolve criminal and civil charges related to its 2015 emissions scandal. That amount will bring the firm's total price tag for resolving this scandal to $19.2 billion, more than the firm had predicted it would have to shell out.

What's next: The deal still must be approved by VW's supervisory board, and that assent is expected to be given either late Tuesday or Wednesday.

The silver lining: Despite the magnitude of the scandal, VW cars remained popular with consumers last year. The automaker shipped a grand total of 10.3 million cars in 2016, a 3.8% increase from 2015.
