Andre De Grasse of Canada finishes ahead of U.S. sprinter Kenneth Bednarek to win the gold medal in the men's 200m final. Photo: Patrick Smith/Getty Images

Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse won Olympic gold in the men's 200-meter final on Wednesday, followed by Americans Kenny Bednarek and Noah Lyles, who took the silver and bronze, respectively.

Why it matters: The men's 200m had been dominated by Jamaica the last few years with running legend Usain Bolt taking back-to-back-to-back golds. But with a retired Bolt out of the race, Canada and the U.S. looked to claim the top spot.

The big picture: De Grasse finished first with a time of 19.62 seconds. Bednarek finished in 19.68 seconds, and Lyles ran a 19.74-second race.

  • The U.S. had not claimed a medal in the race since the 2008 Beijing Games. It hasn't snatched gold since Shawn Crawford won in 2004.

Team USA won gold in the Tokyo Paralympic Games women's sitting volleyball final on Sunday morning local time.

The big picture: The defending champions beat China 3-1 in the final. After the event was added to the Paralympics in 2004, China won the first three golds. The Americans' win took the U.S. Paralympic medals tally to 103, including 36 golds.

Editor's note: This article has been updated with details of China's previous wins in the event.

Unvaccinated athletes face 21-day quarantine at Beijing Olympics

Athletes, staff members and journalists at the 2022 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games who have not been vaccinated against the coronavirus will be required to quarantine for three weeks, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) outlined in its newly-published "playbooks."

Why it matters: The quarantine period is longer than the Games themselves, meaning vaccinations or an earlier arrival date will be required to participate in or cover the Games.

FTX CEO predicts more U.S. crypto flight

Photo: "Axios on HBO"

FTX doesn't look much like a company valued at $25 billion. Its new headquarters, located in a sleepy part of The Bahamas, is so nondescript as to not even have a sign. But it does expect to soon have neighbors.

Driving the news: Founder and CEO Sam Bankman-Fried tells "Axios on HBO" to expect "more and more crypto flight from the states" if the U.S. doesn't soon create a regulatory regime for cryptocurrencies.
